Managing SharePoint Tenants with HC Panel

SharePoint tenants within your company are structured and managed efficiently through the HC Panel. This article provides insights into the tenant structure and segregation at both the HC and SharePoint levels.

Tenant Creation and Organization

HC Panel Creation:
- The HC Panel facilitates the creation of SharePoint Organizations and their associated users.
- All SharePoint Organizations' and their users are placed within their respective Organizational Units (OU) in the Active Directory, for streamlined management.
Creating SharePoint Sites:
- To accommodate additional customers requiring SharePoint services, separate SharePoint sites can be created for each customer (panel user).
- Note: You have the flexibility to link one WebApplication to all SharePoint sites for all customers, or alternatively, assign separate WebApplications to individual customers using HC.

WebApplication Configuration

Utilize HC's flexibility to either link one WebApplication to all SharePoint sites or assign separate WebApplications to individual customers (panel users). This allows tailored configurations based on your organizational requirements.

Segregation Levels

1. HC Level Segregation

At the HC level, segregation is implemented to ensure that:
- Tenant admins (panel users) only have visibility into their specific SharePoint sites.
- These tenant admins (panel users) can modify permissions exclusively for their SharePoint sites and their corresponding users from within the HC10 control panel.

2. SharePoint Level Segregation

Segregation at the SharePoint level is achieved through HC Panel code, providing a two-tiered approach:
- Example: Tenant 1 vs. Tenant 2 (SharePoint Organization 1 vs. SharePoint Organization 2)
- - Users belonging to Tenant1 (SharePoint Organization 1) will not have visibility into the users of Tenant2 (SharePoint Organization 2).
  - Tenant admins from Tenant1 will only see and modify permissions for users within their own SharePoint Site, maintaining confidentiality and data integrity.

By leveraging the features and flexibility of the HC Panel, your company can efficiently manage SharePoint tenants, ensuring optimal security and segregation at both the organizational and SharePoint-specific levels.

Error occurred while getting SharePoint locales

When creating a new SharePoint Organization in HC panel throws the following error "Error occurred while getting SharePoint locales" as per below screenshot:

There are a few steps that needs to be performed in order to resolve the above issue:

Make sure HC control Server and SharePoint Server have the same HC build
Run HC provisioning service under the Domain Administrator
After changing the Log-on properties of HC provisioning service in the above step, restart HC provisioning service on the SharePoint Server.

How to configure SharePoint with HC with non-Domain Admin user account?

Question : How to run SharePoint using Non-Domain Admin account ?

Answer : Many organizations do not wish to use their core Domain Admin account for configurations of SharePoint applications servers. Therefore in order to cater to the needs of such organizations SharePoint should be allowed to be configured with a non-domain admin account. To configure SharePoint with a non-domain admin account follow the below steps :

Log on Hosting Controller Provisioning service with a non-admin account on SharePoint Server.

After Operating System 2016 any web based service will not be accessible if it is running with non-admin (local or domain) account. Since HC Provisioning Service will be running with delegate SP account, we will execute following command on all SharePoint front-end servers.

Open cmd by running as administrator

netsh http add urlacl url=http://+:8796/ user=ad22\HCSP

2. Execute this command Add-SPShellAdmin -UserName AD22\HCSP in SharePoint Management Shell.

Connect to the MSSQL Server management studio which hosts the SharePoint application. Navigate to path Security > Login >> Find the non-admin user (HCSP)
1. Assign following DB schema “db_owner , db_securityadmin , SharePoint_Shell_Access , SPDataAccess” for below databases;

i.SharePoint_AdminContent

ii.SharePoint_Config

iii. WSS_Content

b. Assign following Server Roles “dbcreator , Securityadmin , sysadmin“

4. If you intend to use the same account HCSP for Active Directory operations, make sure it has Full control “CREATE/READ/UPDATE/DELETE” permissions on the root of hosted OU.

5. Execute following commands in order listed below in SharePoint Management Shell.

CMD 1: to retrieve the current Farm Administrators
$WebApp = get-spwebapplication -includecentraladministration | where-object {$_.DisplayName -like "SharePoint Central Administration*"}
$Web = Get-SPweb($WebApp.Url)
$FarmAdminGroup = $Web.SiteGroups["Farm Administrators"]
$FarmAdminGroup.users

CMD 2: to add the user to the Farm Administrators group

$user = "ad22\hcsp"

$FarmAdminGroup.AddUser($user, "", $user, "")

CMD 3: to retrieve the list of current Farm Administrators

$FarmAdminGroup = $Web.SiteGroups["Farm Administrators"]

$FarmAdminGroup.users

Grant permission on web application by going into SharePoint administration Login to the farm's Central Administration as a farm administrator > Applications Management > Web Applications > Manage Web Applications.

Select the Web Application that will be used in HC Control Panel and click on “User Policy” > Add User > Select HCSP user and give Full Control Permissions.
Add user “HCSP” to a local group (WSS_ADMIN_WPG) on the SharePoint FE servers.

How to add an SSL enabled SharePoint site

Create a secure Web Application from within central administration. Choose the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) option.
Login to Hosting Controller and create a SharePoint site. While creating the site, select the SSL enabled Web Application created earlier.
Manually assign certificate to newly added SharePoint site in IIS. If there is only one SharePoint site, the certificate will be assigned automatically else you have to assign it manually. Hosting Controller does not assign it by itself.

Question: How to add SharePoint Users in Bulk through HC?

You can add bulk SharePoint Users in HC panel at Reseller/Tenant Admin level path: Hosting Services :: Manage SharePoint :: SharePoint Sites :: SharePoint Users :: Add Bulk Users

Below is the CSV format Bulk-SharePoint-Users.zip
FirstName, LastName, EmailID, Password (This line must be on top in the csv file )

John, Peter, john@domain.com, W3lcome
, , john@domain.com,W3lcome

Note: Don't insert space after comma ','

P.S:

FirstName and LastName are optional and can be set empty. In such a case, firstname will be parsed from Email ID as first portion of email.
EmailID and Password fields are necessary.

SharePoint site is not being created through HC panel

Question: Why SharePoint site is not being created through HC panel?

Answer:
Here are some of the following reasons:

1. Logon Type of HC Remoting Service should be Domain Administrator: If HC Remoting Service is not running under Domain Administrator user on SharePoint server then HC will not create SharePoint sites.

2. Share Point is not properly configured in HC panel: If SharePoint is not properly configured in HC panel from Cluster Configuration :: Manage Servers :: Edit Server :: SharePoint Server at host level then HC will not create SharePoint sites. So, make sure that the Administrator's "User Name" and "password" for SharePoint should be specified correctly in HC panel. The user name for SharePoint will be <Domain_Name>\Administrator under Cluster Configuration :: Manage Servers :: Edit Server :: SharePoint Server.

3. SharePoint installation should not be in Standalone Environment, and as a part of Domain: In order for the SharePoint to work with HC, SharePoint installation must be done in Active Directory Domain. First join this server to AD Domain and then install SharePoint on that particular Server. SharePoint installation in Standalone environment is not supported in HC panel.

4. SharePoint Database Server installation: During SharePoint installation on any server, choose option "install into firmware", also the Database Server for SharePoint should not be internal Database Server rather it should be another SQL Server instance on the same SharePoint machine else the user will not be able to create SharePoint sites in HC panel.

Error Occurred While Adding SharePoint Site, 75300180

Question: ErrorCode: 75300180: Error occurred while adding SharePoint site. Failed to create site Organizational Unit.

Answer:
This problem occurs due to insufficient privileges on HCRemoting service.

Solution:
To resolve this issue, follow the instructions below:

Access Sharepoint machine.
Open Services.msc.
Right click on HCRemoting Service.
Run this service under the Domain Admin user, who has permissions to create an OU in Active Directory.

This process will resolve the problem.
